In September 1814, during the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key watched as the American flag continued to fly over Fort McHenry after a 25-hour British bombardment. Inspired by that powerful sight, he penned the words that would become our national anthem.

A true classic of the sea, BELLE POULE has been training French naval cadets for nearly a century.

Built in 1932 as a replica of an Icelandic cod fishing vessel, BELLE POULE serves as a sail training schooner for students of the École Navale. She is the fourth ship of her name in the French Navy.
During World War II, BELLE POULE sailed to the United Kingdom following the fall of France and joined the Free French Naval Forces. She returned to Brest in 1945 and continues her legacy today—training cadets in European waters alongside her sister ship, Étoile.
From resilience in wartime to shaping the next generation of naval leaders, BELLE POULE embodies maritime tradition and international partnership.

Ship Spotlight: ROU Capitán MIRANDA 🇺🇾
Built in 1930, Capitán MIRANDA is a proud sail training vessel of the Navy of Uruguay. Originally launched as a geographic survey ship, she was later transformed into a striking three-masted schooner and returned to service in 1978.
Today, Capitán MIRANDA sails the world as a floating ambassador for Uruguay—training naval cadets while representing her country at ports and international maritime celebrations across the globe.

Launched in 2017, KRI BIMA SUCI is the Indonesian Navy’s newest—and largest—sail training ship. Named for a legendary Javanese hero symbolizing strength, bravery, and righteousness, this stunning vessel serves as a true floating ambassador for Indonesia, visiting ports and maritime celebrations around the world.
One of the largest tall ships afloat, KRI BIMA SUCI carries more than 36,000 square feet of sail, supports a crew of up to 200, and is an unforgettable sight under full sail.

❄️ #TBT - The Great Freeze of 1976–77 ❄️
With frigid temperatures and our first snowfall of the season arriving this week, it feels like the perfect time to look back at one of Baltimore’s coldest winters on record.
During the Great Freeze of 1976–77, extreme cold caused large portions of the Chesapeake Bay and Baltimore’s waterfront to freeze solid. Ice stretched for miles, shipping was disrupted, and in some places, people were even able to walk out onto the frozen water—a sight that’s almost impossible to imagine today.
While this week’s cold snap isn’t quite on that level, it’s a reminder that Baltimore’s maritime history has always been shaped by the seasons—and by the power of winter weather on the waterfront.

#OnThisDay: On December 7, 1941, the attack on Pearl Harbor forever changed naval history and the course of our nation. Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all who served.
Today, a memorial ceremony is being held aboard U.S. Coast Guard Cutter WHEC-37, the last warship still afloat that witnessed the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Hosted by Historic Ships in Baltimore, this commemoration marks the 84th anniversary of that historic day and serves as a meaningful tribute to those who served during WWII.
The ceremony, performed by the St. Andrew’s Society of Baltimore, is free to the public and stands as an important way for both Historic Ships in Baltimore and the City of Baltimore to honor the heroes of Pearl Harbor and remember those who lost their lives on December 7, 1941.

The sight of the flag still flying over Fort McHenry after a night of bombardment moved Francis Scott Key to write the iconic words that would become our national anthem.
📸 In the photo: Soldiers from the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Regiment “Old Guard” salute a replica of the massive 30-by-42-foot flag that inspired Key. Hand-stitched like the original, the flag has 15 stars and 15 stripes and was flown at the exact time and location Key observed from the truce ship The President in Baltimore Harbor.

Meet the training ship of the German Navy! Launched in 1958, Gorch Fock is the second vessel to carry the name—honoring writer Johann Kinau, known by his pen name “Gorch Fock,” who died in the Battle of Jutland in 1916.

This stunning three-masted barque serves as both a training ship and a sailing ambassador, representing her nation around the world with grace and color.
Commissioned in 1968, she was named in honor of Gloria Zawadsky De Rebéiz, wife of Colombia’s former Minister of Defense who helped authorize her construction. With her towering masts and bright tricolor sails, ARC GLORIA is a true symbol of Colombian spirit and seafaring tradition.

Still docked in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor today, the USS CONSTELLATION is a living link to America’s maritime past. Launched in 1854, she was the last sail-powered warship built by the U.S. Navy and served for over a century—protecting trade routes, training sailors, and fighting the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
Today, she’s beautifully preserved as a National Historic Landmark at Pier 1, where visitors can step aboard to explore her decks and discover 100+ years of naval history.

Did you know sailors once believed bananas were bad luck at sea? Entire voyages banned them!
The superstition likely came from the 1700s when fast-moving banana boats made fishing nearly impossible (no time to catch dinner!). Others blamed bananas for attracting pests—or even spoiling other fruit cargo. Whatever the reason, many crews swore: “No bananas on board!”

Join us on Monday, June 17, from 10am to 6pm for Fell's Point Family Fun Day in Broadway Square! Enjoy kid-friendly activities, imagination blocks, nature fun, and the exciting Gutter Regatta Races with free materials provided by Brown Advisory. End the day with a mindfulness session by The Sedona House featuring yoga, meditation, and a soothing sound bath. All activities are free and open to everyone!

🎉 Day 5 of Maryland Fleet Week & Flyover Baltimore is a wrap! While the festivals in the Inner Harbor and Martin State Airport have ended, the fun continues in Fells Point tomorrow, Monday, June 17 with Family Fun Day.
🚢Ships will also be open for free public tours from 10AM-5PM.
Family Fun Day will host Gutter Regatta Races and much more! All are welcome to this free, family-friendly event! 🚢🎈
